The BCCS School Model
The Brighter Choice Charter Schools:
- Educate boys and girls in separate classrooms, a first in the nation for public elementary charter schools. Boys and girls are subject to the same detailed learning standards and have access to the same facilities, teachers, library resources, learning materials, and technology, but simply are grouped separately for the purposes of classroom instruction;
- Provide students with a broad and rigorous liberal-arts education, including phonics-based reading instruction;
- Offers a unique "Learning Guarantee" - not offered by any other public school in New York State - under which students will be entitled to a privately funded scholarship to attend another public or private school if they fail any state exam in math, reading, or science after three years of good attendance at the charter school;
- Offers a longer school day and school year;
- Has hired teachers to teach the subject they have mastered, rather than generalist grade-level teachers;
- Bases employment contracts for the principal and teachers on performance, not just longevity;
- Provides computers in every classroom, in addition to a mobile computer lab of wireless laptops;
- Requires students to wear school uniforms;
- Administers a series of standardized examinations in every grade and every major subject that far surpasses the approach taken by most public schools in New York State; and
- Ties instruction to hundreds of detailed grade-by-grade, subject-by-subject learning standards.
